Canisius Scores High in Numerous College Rankings
Buffalo, NY – Canisius climbed to the 23rd spot in the top tier of U.S. News & World Report’s 2017 rankings for America’s Best Colleges, Regional Universities – North. Canisius moved up four spots from its U.S. News ranking of 27th in 2015.
The college was recognized for its first-year student retention rate, average graduation rate, small class sizes and student-faculty ratio (11:1). U.S. News separately ranks comprehensive colleges and universities by region of the country. There are 137 schools in the Regional Universities – North category.
Canisius is also in the top 10 named to U.S. News & World Report’s 2017 Best Value Schools.
Canisius ranked 8th out of 42 regional universities in the North. The Best Value Schools ranking takes into account a school’s academic quality (based on U.S. News’ Best Colleges ranking) and the net cost of attendance for a student who received the average level of need-based financial aid.
Canisius’ strong support of veterans also earned the college recognition from U.S. News & World Report. The 2017 rankings place Canisius 12th among 52 regional universities in the North on the publication’s list of Best Colleges for Veterans. To be considered for this ranking, schools must participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program, be certified for the GI Bill and have 20 or more enrolled students using GI Bill benefits to fund their tuition and fees. Schools also had to be in the top half of U.S. News’ Best Colleges ranking to be considered.
The U.S. News & World Report rankings are one resource that students and parents use to evaluate their college choices. The results are based on several key measures of quality that include (but are not limited to) graduation and retention rates, assessment of excellence, faculty resources, financial resources and student selectivity. Each indicator is assigned a weight and expressed as a percentage. Colleges are then ranked based on their composite scores. The categories in which schools are listed are based on the classifications created by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.
Based on peer rankings, U.S. News and World Report ranked the Richard J. Wehle School of Business:
- 12th out of 48 on its list of Best Undergraduate Business Programs among small, private universities, nationally
- 28th in accounting and 27th in finance out of all 488 institutions that participated in Best Undergraduate Business Programs
Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education
Canisius College ranked 398th on the 2017 Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education College Ranking. This new student outcome and teaching focused ranking includes more than 1,000 U.S. colleges and universities. Within the Northeast region, Canisius ranked 144th out of 305 institutions.
Developed in partnership with U.S. experts and universities, the ranking adopts a balanced scorecard approach using 15 individual performance metrics grouped into four pillars – Resources (30%), Engagement (20%), Outcomes (40%) and Environment (10%).
Canisius’ highest ranked pillar was engagement.
Data sources include the Times Higher Education (THE) U.S. Student Survey, and THE Academic Reputation Survey, along with public data from IPEDs and the College Scorecard on areas including completion rates, graduate employment and loan repayments.

The latest national study from LendEDU, a marketplace for student loans and student loan refinance, places Canisius 179th out of 1,700 institutions in Most Affordable Colleges for Freshmen with Financial Need.
LendEDU uses data from Peterson’s, a company that provides education content and guidance for students and parents, to rank the top 250 colleges and universities based on average dollar amount given.
- Canisius is the only university in WNY named to the list.
- Of the 28 Jesuit colleges and universities, eight made the top 250 list. Of those eight Jesuit schools, Canisius ranked 4th.
CANISIUS IS RANKED A TOP CATHOLIC COLLEGE
Newsmax ranked Canisius College 11th on its 2016 list of top 40 traditional Catholic and Jesuit Colleges in America. Newsmax, an American news media organization, ranked more than 300 Catholic and Jesuit schools (there are 28 Jesuits schools within the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities). Criteria included legacy and influence, along with quantifiable measurements like class size, student-faculty ratio, and student retention rates.
- Canisius ranked 7th out of the 28 Jesuit schools, all of which made the top 40 list.
Three additional new rankings place Canisius College among the top Catholic colleges and universities in the nation.
College Choice ranked Canisius 39th on its list of Top Catholic Colleges and Universities for 2016. The independent online publication is dedicated to helping students and their families find the right college. Criteria used to compile the list included factors that freshmen indicated are most important in their college search: college reputation, net cost, financial aid packages and average graduate salary. The ranking aims to find the nexus between the best of academic prestige and return on investment.
The 2016-2017 Catholic Colleges of Distinction guidebook recognized Canisius for great teaching, successful outcomes, vibrant campus community and engaged student body. Specifically, the Colleges of Distinction guidebook noted the college’s strong focus on teaching undergraduates, and its wide variety of innovative learning experiences and personal development opportunities for students. Canisius was also cited as being nationally recognized by education professionals as an excellent school and highly-valued by graduate schools and employers for its outstanding preparation of students.
BestCollege’s.com placed Canisius 13th on the list of Best Online Catholic Colleges. The ranking highlights Canisius’ “innovative online graduate degree options” and “small class sizes, which encourage engagement and group discussion.
