Cura Personalis is Theme for Lenten and Easter Programming

March 3, 2013

Buffalo, NY – The concept of Cura Personalis, or care of the person, is the theme for all upcoming Lenten and Easter programming at Canisius University.  “Cura Personalis is an Ignatian spiritual principle grounded in the reverence for and celebration of the unique gifts and needs of the individual,” says Rev. Michael Tunney, S.J., director of Mission & Identity.  “The Cura Personalis theme represents our goal to communicate and create an atmosphere of Ignatian principles and ideals on campus,” adds Lu Firestone, interim director of Campus Ministry.

One component of the programming is a photographic display that centers around the Cura Personalis theme.  Students, faculty, staff and administrators bring the theme to life through the creation of a personal, brief phrase.  The phrase is written with removable marker on their forearm/s and/or heads and/or hand/s.  Senior sociology major, Allina Santiago, took black and white photos of the participants under the direction of Thomas A. Wolf, adjunct professor of fine arts/studio art.

The moving and emotional portraits are displayed in the tunnels of the college’s Richard E. Winter ’42 Student Center. The Canisius community continues to participate in the photo project and additional photos will be added in new campus locations throughout the Lenten and Easter seasons.

The Cura Personalis Project is a collaborative effort organized by the Offices of Campus Ministry, Mission & Identity and the Division of Student Affairs.  Additional programming through Campus Ministry and Student Affairs includes Masses, Ignatian Scholarship Day, speakers, wellness events, including a Wellness Fair, Zumba and Kickboxing classes and Stress Less Days.

The photo project was inspired by Robert Fogerty, photographer and creator of “Dear World” photo shoots.
