August 13, 2013

Four Canisius University alumni are among 25 local teachers named to the 2013 “Teachers of Merit” list compiled by Buffalo’s Business First. The Canisius alumni who were recognized include:

  • Arman Afshani MSED ’93 (North Tonawanda High School)
  • Patrick Braunscheidel ’92, MSED ’95 (West Seneca East Senior High School)
  • Matthew Hellerer MSED ’94 (St. Joseph Collegiate Institute, Kenmore-Tonawanda)
  • William Shaw ’79, MS ’79 (Lockport High School)

Students nominated to the All-Western New York Academic Team are asked each fall to identify the best teachers they have had during their 13 years in school. Teachers who are named by multiple students over a three- year period move on to the final phase of the selection process. Preference is given to educators who have earned other national and state teaching awards, attained national board certification, helped produce impressive scores on standardized tests and Business First’s subject ratings, and/or won championships as sports coaches or music directors.
