ABEC Internships

Internships provide diverse opportunities to gain real-world experience as an industry professional for students interested in animal behavior, training & welfare, conservation, husbandry, humane education and anthrozoology. They also provide participating institutions with an eager, responsible worker who is anxious to learn and willing to work hard.

The program regularly sponsors internships at zoos and aquariums, animal shelters and rescues, wildlife rehabilitation centers, wildlife refuges, and dog training and daycare facilities. Recent locations include:

  • Dallas Zoo
  • Sea Life Park Hawaii
  • Aquarium of Niagara
  • Messinger Woods
  • SPCA Serving Erie County
  • International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC)
  • Disney’s Animal Kingdom
  • Rosamond Gifford Zoo
  • Myaka Lemur Center
  • Buffalo Zoo
  • National Aviary
  • Cape Anne Whale Watch
  • Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge
  • Oakland Zoo

Students can complete up to two internships for course credit by enrolling in ABEC 491 and ABEC 492. Students interested in this option should contact the internship coordinator, Miranda K. Workman. Applications for internships can be obtained in the ABEC Office (Health Sciences Building, room 201).
