abby scalise mba canisiusAbigail Scalise, Flexible MBA

Does your program have any hands-on aspects?
The MBA program has the LPD certificate program which was really helpful because I got to meet alumni working in my industry and at the end of the program, I will gain a certification. Concentrations have hands-on aspects, for example, international business has a Europe class where you are able to go abroad. For those interested in the Investment Research concentration, there is a student run investment fund that you can participate in.

What does an average class look like in your program?
An average class size is anywhere from 20-40 students. The MBA program is hybrid so some weeks classes are taught on-campus and other weeks classes are taught online. There are a variety of courses that are also taught completely online as well. Classes are held in the evening, some courses also offer a section at an earlier time to accomodate all schedules.

Why did you choose Canisius?
I chose Canisius because of their flexibility and alumni network. I wanted to be able to work part-time while going to school and their program is extremely flexible. They have a vast alumni network all over the US as well as in many major companies in Buffalo. Canisius is also a smaller school which is nice because professors are able to get to know you.

Are you able to work while in your program?
Yes! The MBA program is extremely flexible at Canisius. You can take as little or as many classes as you want. I have some friends in the program who work part-time and take 4 classes and I have other friends who work full-time and take 2 classes.

Does your program have any hands-on aspects that make it stand out?
The beautiful thing about the MSA Program is that Dr. O' Rourke is so invested in each student's growth and is always looking for a way to help them out. He consistently sends his students opportunities around Buffalo and nationwide that give them a chance to involve themselves in the sports industry. He is all about making connections and one of the best I have ever seen do it.

Why did you choose Canisius?
I chose Canisius because of the small college vibe and it is completely different from where I came before, UB. At Canisius, the classes are so small that you have to build a relationship with your professor and you have to pay attention in class. At UB, I was in 400 person lecture halls where I never met the professor or had a conversation with them. It is a completely different atmosphere and one I enjoy.

Does your program have any hands-on aspects that make it stand out?
The school counseling program includes a 100 hour practicum experience and a 600 hour internship experience. There are opportunities to go to the ACA (American counselors association) conference if the student is interested.

What does an average class look like in your program?
All classes are held after 4pm. Either 4-6:45pm or 7-9:45pm. Most classes are on campus. There are about 5 classes that are only offered online or in hybrid format.

Why did you choose Canisius?
I chose Canisius because the school counseling program is CACREP accredited and a license from NYS is desirable in the job market. It also aligned well with the Jesuit values of Canisius College and appreciated the faith basis of the college.

Are you able to work while in your program?
The program allows for you to work during at least the first year. During the second year working is still possible, but it gets harder to schedule work around practicum and internship hours, but it is still possible if necessary. I worked at least 2 jobs all the way through the program, but I had to add an extra semester to make this possible.

Does your program have any hands-on aspects that make it stand out?
There is a 400-hour internship required before graduation. There is also an extensive alumni list that the program director (Dr. O'Rourke) updates regularly and encourages current students to reach out for jobs/internships. Through my program, I traveled to Disney's Magnolia Golf Course to work with their ESPN crew making highlight videos for the MAAC golf tournament.

What does an average class look like in your program?
Classes are generally from 8-15 people online. Several courses use discussion posts so I respond/interact with many of those students that way.

Why did you choose Canisius?
I chose Canisius because of Dr. O'Rourke and how passionate he is about his program and his students. He always keeps in contact with alumni and regularly sends emails to his current students about job postings and networking events. Dr. O really cares about his students and he makes it apparent through his care and attention to his individual students.

Are you able to work while in your program?
Yes! Not only do I have a graduate assistantship (20-hours per week), I also work in the Buffalo Sabres store and for Canisius athletics (around 40-hours per week). Having classes online offers me that flexibility.
