Animal Behavior, Ecology, and Conservation and Psychology Student Letter

Taryn Bansmer
Welcome to Canisius University! I am a senior studying both animal behavior and psychology. The science programs here are vast and give students wonderful opportunities. Often guest speakers will be brought to campus, talking to the students about research, career opportunities or important topics being discussed today in that certain field. They also have opportunities for students to join research teams as well.

Through the Animal Behavior, Ecology and Conservation (ABEC) program, I have been a part of Dr. Sue Margulis’ research team at the Buffalo Zoo for the last three and a half years now. I also have had the opportunity to go to conferences with my research team and others in the ABEC department. The science department has internship opportunities in almost any workplace. This gives you great experience! Canisius also offers its students the opportunity to study abroad, which is something I took advantage of. I spent about four months in Australia, taking classes for both of my majors as well as some elective classes.

Each department has opportunities for its students and I encourage you to take advantage of this! They help you grow as a young adult and advance your experience and knowledge to prepare you more for your future! Here at Canisius everyone cares for one another—a key motto is cura personalis (care for the whole person).
