Communication Studies Student Letter Jessica McKay
I started my Canisius journey in the spring of 2015 as a transfer student. I still remember how I felt sitting in the Griff Center after the receptionist gave me the warmest welcome and a student started talking to me as if we had known each other for years. My orientation leader took me under her wing, and my professors opened my eyes and ears to so much more than textbook material. I recall thinking, so this is what college is supposed to be like! I made it my mission to become as involved as I possibly could.
Some highlights of my Canisius College career include studying abroad in Florence, Italy, for a semester. I traveled every weekend, took a ballet class, and learned how to make pasta from scratch. I also participated in two service immersions, one of which was in West Virginia, where I lived with individuals facing homelessness. This led me to find my passion in the nonprofit sector. On campus, I was involved in multiple extracurricular activities, including the Student Programming Board. Helping with major campus-wide events steered me toward the event-planning field I am in now.
Following graduation in May of 2018 as a communication studies major, I started working as a Marketing and Development Coordinator for Mercy Flight, a nonprofit organization specializing in emergency response. I can say without a doubt that Canisius shaped me into the young woman I am today and I am proud to be a Griff.
