Message From The Director

Bruce Dierenfield

Dear Honors Students, Prospective Students, and Parents,

Welcome to the Canisius All-College Honors Program! Nearly 60 years in existence, Honors offers exceptional students unique opportunities in and outside the classroom. The rewards in Honors are many, including rich personal and intellectual experiences, the satisfaction of knowing you succeeded in one of the college’s most challenging academic programs, and recognition of your Honors distinction on your diploma and at graduation. Because the program is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence and the ideal of cura personalis—care of the whole person—joining Honors can be the first step in a life-changing experience. Roughly 10 percent of Canisius students are in Honors, and their majors span the academic curriculum.

Our goals in Honors are threefold:
1. Prepare Honors students to become independent, critical thinkers, ready to move into satisfying careers and have fulfilling personal lives
2. Cultivate a sense of community among Honors students by offering (a) small seminar-style courses, (b) abundant social & cultural activities, and (c) an (optional) Honors residence on campus
3. Promote justice by encouraging Honors students to become men and women for and with others, both within the Honors Program and through community service

I hope you will ask questions about Honors or come by to see me, and, ultimately, join us for an amazing experience. You will be inspired, you will make great friends, and you will have a chance at leadership. You won’t regret joining the Canisius Honors Program.

With best wishes,
Bruce Dierenfield, PhD (CT 606)
