BUFFALO, NY – U.S. News & World Report’s 2021 rankings of Best Colleges and Universities places Canisius College at No. 1 in New York State on its list of Best Value Schools. Canisius ranked No. 3 on the Best Value Schools ranking among all 73 regional colleges and universities in the North. That is up two spots from No. 5 last year.
The Best Value Schools ranking takes into account academic quality (based on U.S. News’ Best Regional Universities North ranking, see below) and the net cost of attendance for a student who received the average level of need-based financial aid. The higher the quality and the lower the cost of the program, the better the deal. The average discounted cost of a Canisius education is $24,989, which represents an approximate 42 percent discount from the total cost of tuition. Sixty-nine percent of Canisius students receive need-based aid.
“Accessibility and affordability have been part of the Canisius mission for nearly 150 years,” said President John J. Hurley. “These latest rankings reinforce that commitment and speak to the value of our faculty, staff, students, alumni and benefactors, all of whom help support the exceptional academic experiences our students receive in and beyond the classroom.”
In addition to being the No. 1 Best Value School in New York State, U.S. News & World Report placed Canisius at No. 19 on its list of Best Regional Universities North and No. 9 on its list of Best Colleges for Veterans in the North.
Canisius was included among the top tier of Best Regional Universities North for its record of student success, its first-year student retention rate, average graduation rate, student-faculty ratio, faculty resources and its average alumni giving rate.
Canisius was similarly included among the top tier of Best Colleges for Veterans in the North. To be considered for this ranking, schools must participate in the Yellow Ribbon Program, be certified for the GI Bill and have 20 or more enrolled undergraduate veterans or active service members. Qualifying schools also had to be in the top half of U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges and Universities rankings.
Based on peer rankings, U.S. News & World Report also ranked the Canisius College Richard J. Wehle School of Business the No. 1 private business program in Western New York.
Canisius received additional accolades on the U.S. News & World Report list of "Best Undergraduate Accounting Programs." In this category, Canisius ranked:
- No. 1 in Western New York
- No. 2 in New York State
- Among the Top 7% Nationwide
Canisius earned similarly commendable rankings on the U.S. News & World Report' list of "Best Undergraduate Finance Programs":

To be considered for the U.S. News & World Report list of Best Undergraduate Business Programs, colleges and universities must be accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).
In addition to the Richard J. Wehle School of Business, the college's School of Education received high marks from the latest U.S. News & World Report. The School of Education earned a ranking of No. 1 in Western New York on U.S. News' list of "Best Undergraduate Teaching Programs."
These same peer rankings placed Canisius No. 1 among private schools in Western New York on U.S. News' list of "Top Performers on Social Mobility." This latter ranking speaks to Canisius' success in offering a world-class education to low income and first generation students. Specifically, the methodology measures how well U.S. colleges and universities graduated students who received federal Pell Grants, which are typically awarded to students who come from households that earn less than $50,000 annually.
