MATHEMATICAL ASSOCIATION OF AMERICA AWARDS FELLOWSHIP TO CANISIUS UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR

December 4, 2020

BUFFALO, NY – Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Statistics Nathan H. Fox, PhD, of Tonawanda, NY, is a recipient of the Project NExT Fellowship, awarded by the Mathematical Association of America (MAA).  Project NExT (New Experiences in Teaching) is a year-long professional development program for new or recent PhDs in the field of mathematical sciences.  It is designed to connect new faculty with expert teachers and leaders in the mathematics community and address three main aspects of an academic career: teaching, research and service. In being named a Project NExT Fellow, Fox joins a community of faculty who are award-winning educators and innovators on their respective campuses.

Nathan Fox, PhD, assistant professor
Fox joined the faculty ranks at Canisius University in fall 2020 and has broad teaching experience and interests across the mathematics curriculum.  His research interests lie at the intersection of combinatorics, number theory and theoretical computer science. Much of Fox’s work relates to using computational tools to explore patterns in sequences of integers.  He also enjoys games, both studying them with mathematics and playing them, and is the author or co-author of several journal articles in the field.

Fox holds a dual BS degree in mathematics and computer science from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities.  He earned his PhD in mathematics from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.

The Mathematical Association of America is among the largest community of mathematicians and students, and works to advance the understanding of mathematics and its impact on the world.  In 1994, two of MAA’s members founded Project NExT to assist in the professional development of new or recent PhDs in the mathematical sciences.  The fellowship addresses all aspects of an individual’s academic career, including the improvement of teaching and learning of mathematics, the engagement in research and scholarship, the search for exciting and interesting service opportunities, and the participation in professional activities.  The program also provides participants with a network of peers and mentors as they assume these responsibilities.

One of 27 Jesuit universities, Canisius is the premier private university in Western New York. Canisius celebrates its sesquicentennial anniversary during the 2019-20 academic year, marking 150 years of Jesuit education and leadership in the city of Buffalo and Western New York.
