Welcome to the Tutoring Center - Old Main 317
The Tutoring Center provides a variety of opportunities for students to achieve academic success. The services are free-of-charge and open to all Canisius students. Individual tutoring services, primarily for humanities based classes, allow students to receive one-on-one academic assistance from peer or adjunct faculty tutors. For courses that lend themselves to more group academic assistance, such as math, accounting and economic courses, group sessions led by peer or adjunct professor tutors occur. Tutors are available in the majority of academic disciplines and employ various academic strategies to help address individual student needs.
The Tutoring Center is an integral part of Student Academic Support Services (SASS). Other important components of this program are:
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic assistance program that utilizes peer-assisted study sessions. SI sessions are regularly-scheduled, informal review sessions in which students compare notes, discuss readings, develop organizational tools, and predict test items. Students learn how to integrate course content and study skills while working together. The sessions are facilitated by SI leaders, students who have previously done well in the course and who attend classes, understand the material and act as a guide through the coursework. The SI study sessions are primarily held in OM320, Sunday-Thursday from 6-10 PM; however, to accomodate different schedules some SI tutors are available during the day (OM 317). The sessions start the second week of classes for the fall and spring semesters.
The Study Center Program (OM318) is open to all students. Study Center is an opportunity for students to focus on their academic work in a quiet environment. Tutors are available to answer questions and provide academic support.
Forming Your Foundation for the Future is a series of workshops designed to assist students to becoming better and more efficient learners. A series of 1 hour workshops are held Tuesday through Friday during the first week of classes. They begin at 2pm and end at 8 pm (6 each day). The topics and schedules will be available at the start of the semester. The workshops for Fall 2012 are offered on Tuesday afternoons from 4-5 pm in OM320. The Tuesday afternoon schedule will be listed in August. These sessions count as Study Center hours.
College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) accredits the center and its tutors. This certification brings international accreditation, standards and training requirements for tutors. Its standards are recognized across the country and overseas, adding to the value of a Canisius education.
Please be aware that the Tutoring Center is closed for the summer. If you need assistance, please email Erika Drummond (drummone@canisius.edu) or call 888-2265.
