Petey’s Pantry at Canisius University is a vital campus food pantry for students, providing free food and essentials — no questions asked. It’s now expanding its impact with the ability to accept online monetary donations and direct donations via Amazon to help address student food insecurity on campus.
The pantry’s new giving options allow supporters to help keep shelves stocked with high-demand items and ensure students have consistent access to nutritious meals and personal care products throughout the year.
“Buffalo faces high rates of food insecurity, and many neighborhoods are considered food deserts, with limited access to affordable, nutritious food,” says Mike Yates, assistant vice president and dean of students at Canisius University. “This impacts some of our commuter students who may already rely on community-based programs where Petey’s Pantry serves as an important student resource to help meet daily needs.” He adds that the recent government shutdown has further strained local food assistance programs, making the pantry’s role even more critical.
Yates notes that Petey’s Pantry is part of the university’s commitment to student well-being and basic needs support. “The pantry is a critical essential-needs service that supports students in moments of significant need—when they may not know where their next meal is coming from, or are juggling work, academics, and personal responsibilities,” he says. “Our goal is to focus on the whole student, providing resources, education and referrals to promote long-term stability.”
Food insecurity among college students can often go unseen, yet it deeply affects a student’s ability to succeed. Student visits to Petey’s Pantry have more than tripled since last year. “Since last August, 363 unique students have used the pantry, with 75 students visiting more than 10 times,” Yates shares. “This October alone, we’ve seen 20 to 40 visitors a day seeking snacks, meal prep items and household essentials.”
Now more than ever, your support makes a difference. If you can’t drop off goods or supplies, Petey’s Pantry now accepts secure online donations — the most efficient way to help. “Your contribution allows us to purchase needed items directly for students and keep the pantry fully stocked for those who rely on it,” Yates explains. He also credits ongoing support from Chartwells Higher Ed food service at Canisius University, whose support through purchasing and donations is helping the pantry meet student needs.
