HEOP Advocacy Events
Annually, the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities (CICU) organizes a trip to Albany to Lobby on behalf of HEOP during February. HEOP students engage in state-wide events, including the virtual HEOP Lobby Day and postcard/email campaigns. CICU and many other New York State institutions lobby for HEOP. If you are interested in participating in the Virtual Lobby Day, please speak with the Associate Director.
Become A Tutor
The COPE Department employs student and professional tutors for a wide variety of subjects. All tutors are compensated at an hourly rate. We are always looking for dedicated undergraduate, graduate, and professional tutors. Student tutors must have earned a B in the course(s), complete a tutoring application, and participate in a personal interview to be considered for employment. Peer Counseling
Peer Counselors develop meaningful relationships with first-year students by serving as a campus resource. PCs serve as mentors providing guidance and support throughout the first year of college by connecting students to college services and serving as a liaison to the HEOP office.
Peer Counselors must maintain a GPA of 2.0 or higher. Peer counselors will meet with each assigned counselee regularly during the HEOP Scholars Academy. In the fall and spring semesters, peer counselors meet with their counselees once a month.
Peer Counseling Job Description
Reports to: Coordinator of Counselor and Support Services
Compensation: Summer room and board for the duration of the HEOP summer program (Dates TBA), Meal plan, and a stipend (amount TBA), leadership and teamwork experience.
Requirements/Qualifications: Enrolled as a full time student at Canisius University, G.P.A. of 2.4 or higher, interested in building a positive community, sense of humor, positive attitude, leadership characteristics and skills, must be at least a first semester sophomore, must be in good disciplinary standing, desire to learn and grow, commitment to teamwork, and ability to communicate clearly.
Terms of Employment: Late June each summer through Mid-May the following year.
Summer: Peer Counselors must participate in all aspects of the HEOP Scholars Academy, devote a significant amount of time to first-year students, live on campus, serve as a mentor, and support a positive learning environment inside and outside of the classroom.
School year: Meet with counselees 1 hour once a month.
