Professional Licensure Disclosure

Before enrolling in any academic degree or certificate program with the intent to seek a professional license or certification in your state, it is vital that you determine whether the academic program will support or fulfill requirements for that license or certification.   The following resources may assist you.  We advise you to contact the relevant licensing board in states where programs may not automatically meet licensing criteria on their own to determine what other requirements may be needed for professional licensure or certification if you are or will be residing outside New York State.

Teacher Education and Educational Administration and Supervision

Our programs lead directly to New York State certification.

New York State has direct reciprocity for teacher certification with the following states, and therefore our curriculum meets the requirements for licensure in: Massachusetts, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Vermont

Direct reciprocity is not available in the following locations and the curriculum does not automatically meet requirements for licensure:

Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and the District of Columbia.

However, an expedited reciprocity process is facilitated by  the NASDTEC Interstate Agreement.  Applicants are offered a limited, non-automatic reciprocity with most states, streamlining the process for those with 3 years professional teaching and/or administrative experience, but often with some additional requirements (state-specific exams, coursework, or leadership experience).

See Teacher Certification Reciprocity information below for further information on the NASTDEC agreement and provisions for each state.

Teacher Certification Reciprocity

Educator preparation candidates who successfully complete the degree and state requirements for teaching, counseling or educational leadership for St. Bonaventure University are certified within New York State. If a graduate wishes to have thatcertification recognized by a different state, s/he should reference the NASDTEC Interstate Reciprocity Agreement. States that have entered into the NASDTEC Interstate Agreement have taken the initiative to expedite the process of transferring certification from one state to another.

Educator preparation graduates in teaching, counseling, or educational leadership who have NYS certification and seek recognition of that certification by another state should be aware that certification requirements and application processes might differ from state to state. S/he should examine the requirements of the state where s/he wishes to obtain certification.

While New York State has reciprocity agreements with many states, specific application paperwork and processes may differ for each state. The table below includes the state certification website:

Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling

Our counseling programs are accredited by CACREP.

Graduation from a CACREP-accredited program and our curriculum meet the educational requirements for licensure in the following locations: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and the District of Columbia.

Our curriculum does not meet all criteria in Florida.  Licensure policies are occasionally updated, so we encourage students to check the current status of their target state’s policies.

School Counseling is also accredited by CACREP, but this is not sufficient for licensure outside of New York State.  Our curriculum meets the educational requirements for licensure in the following states:

Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming.

In the following locations, our curriculum does not fully meet the educational requirements for licensure:

Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, South Dakota, and the District of Columbia.

As with Clinical Mental Health Counseling, licensure policies may change periodically and so students should refer to the American School Counselor Association's website for the most up to date information:

Accounting

Our program meets licensure requirements in New York State.

Students seeking licensure in all other states must apply and submit a transcript to the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA), which will review to determine if the curriculum meets the requirements of that state. Normally, if a program is licensure qualified in New York or any state, it will be a cursory review. However, states vary on mandated courses and, as such, may require an additional course or two.

Specific state requirements can be found at the NASBA website:

https://nasba.org/stateboards/

Physician Assistant Studies

Our ARC-PA accredited PA program meets the educational requirements for licensure in all states.  Students are eligible to take the Physician Assistant National Certifying Examination (PANCE) and become certified for up to six years after completing the requirements for graduation from the program. See the NCCPA site for further information on licensure for physician assistants

Contact the Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness if you have further questions on these requirements.
