Educational Leadership and Supervision
Leaders of educational organizations are in a position to positively impact students, staff, parents and communities. Moreover, they are given the responsibility and authority to establish education programs, influence how students learn, and direct the professional development of staff.
Our program in Educational Leadership and Supervision prepares today’s educators for tomorrow’s challenges so they can lead and innovate as senior administrators. You’ll gain the knowledge and skills essential for success in building or districtwide educational leadership positions.
Fully online, the program has four sequential segments:
1. A New York State School Building Leader license (SBL) – An SBL is required for positions such as a principal or assistant principal in NYS public schools.
2. A New York State School District Leader license (SDL) – An SDL is required for positions such as a superintendent, assistant superintendent, or any position with districtwide administrative responsibilities.
You can apply for the SBL and/or the SDL after completing the required courses and internship for the SBL/SDL portion of the program.
3. A New York State School District Business Leader license (SDBL) – An SDBL is required for positions such as assistant superintendent for school business operations.
You can apply for the SDBL after completing the required courses and internship for the SDBL portion of the program.
If you earn both an SDL and an SDBL, you’ll be eligible for positions that include all district-level roles, such as superintendent and assistant superintendent for school business operations.
You might also consider earning an MBA in addition to your SDBL to strengthen your business management skills.
4. A Master of Science in Educational Leadership – Although an MS in Educational Leadership is not required for certification, our advanced degree will set your candidacy apart in a competitive field and unlock greater professional opportunities.
One (1) 600-hour internship is required for an SBL, SDL or SDBL Certificate or a Master's in Educational Leadership. The school is committed to working with graduate students to identify and successfully complete an Internship that meets the NYS and Canisius standards while allowing the student to fulfill current professional and personal responsibilities.
