Clinical Laboratory Science

The medical sciences field continues to rapidly expand and there is currently a national shortage of licensed medical laboratory science professionals.  Clinical laboratories perform tests to aid in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases.  If you have strong scientific interests, are interested in becoming one of societies front-line of defense workers against pandemics and diseases like Covid and you don't mind the sight of blood, consider Clinical Laboratory Sciences.

Canisius boasts a state accredited / licensure qualifying program, in which you take part in three years of campus-based classroom and lab-work and one year of a hands-on internship in an accredited hospital laboratory.  Currently, Canisius has affiliation agreements with nationally accredited hospital programs at Rochester General Hospital in Rochester New York, UPMC Chautauqua in Jamestown New York, St. Vincent’s Hospital in Erie Pennsylvania and Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in Brooklyn New York.  The program at the Brooklyn Methodist Hospital requires the student to pay a supplemental fee in addition to the Canisius fourth year of tuition.  This money is required to cover program tuition and fees for the fourth year of the Brooklyn Methodist program, while the other programs tuition and fees are covered by the fourth year of Canisius tuition.

While at Canisius, the student concentrates on the natural sciences with special emphasis on Biology and Chemistry.  The faculty consists of PhDs, pathologists, Clinical Laboratory Scientists and others recognized for their experience in the various sub-specialties of laboratory medicine.  In your hospital rotation, you will work with experts in such areas as clinical chemistry, phlebotomy, bacteriology, immunology, blood-bank, hematology and parasitology.  You will take the New York state license exam when you are finished with your hospital rotation.  Once licensed, you will have many options from which to choose for a specific area that appeals to you.
