Canisius Introduces New Major in Law, Policy and Philosophy

October 16, 2026

Buffalo, NY – Canisius University will offer a new bachelor’s degree in Law, Policy and Philosophy beginning in fall 2027.  The interdisciplinary major combines philosophy, political science and history to explore questions of rights, liberty, equality and the responsibilities of government.  Students learn to weigh evidence, challenge assumptions and build reasoned arguments. Coursework also draws on related fields, including criminal justice and psychology.

“The most challenging questions in law and public policy rarely have simple answers. They require us to understand different perspectives, examine our assumptions and consider the consequences of our decisions,” said Nancy Wallace, PhD, dean of the Division of Arts, Education and Sciences. “That kind of rigorous, value-centered inquiry is central to a Canisius education and prepares students to lead with both competence and conscience.”

Students develop these skills through coursework that emphasizes both written and oral communication. In their senior seminar, students apply legal, empirical and philosophical reasoning to questions of law and policy, then present and orally defend their conclusions.

Through the Raichle Pre-Law Center and connections with Canisius alumni working in law and related fields, students can participate in internships with local firms and corporations and explore advocacy work and community-based research.

The Law, Policy and Philosophy major prepares graduates for law school and careers in government, public policy, public affairs and advocacy. Graduates may also apply their skills in business, consulting and research, where analyzing complex issues, evaluating evidence and building persuasive arguments are essential.
