BUFFALO, NY – The Canisius University Border Initiative will host a week of events beginning Friday, October 19 through Friday, October 26. All events take place on Canisius University’s campus. The initiative is a collaborative Ignatian approach by students, faculty and staff to encourage discussion about and engagement with refugee and immigration issues on a global scale.
A staged reading of Mojada: A Medea in Los Angeles written by Luis Alfaro on Friday, October 19 kicks off the opening of Border Initiative Week. The reading will take place at 2:00 p.m. in the college’s Marie Maday Theatre. A reception will follow.
Campus Ministry will sponsor a migrant mass on Sunday, October 21 in Christ the King Chapel located in the Canisius University quad. The mass begins at 7:30 p.m.
The Border Initiative hosts a multimedia opening and reception on Monday, October 22 from 5:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. in the Andrew L. Bouwhuis Library. Exhibits on display will include immersive games, images of the Kino border initiative and media portraying migrations and borders. Refreshments will be served.
An immigrant simulation is scheduled for Tuesday, October 23 at 11:30 a.m. It is open to all faculty and staff. Contact the Modern Languages Department for the location. Following the simulation, a roundtable discussion featuring topics about borders and migrations will be held from 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. in the Regis Room located in the Student Center. Keynote speakers include Canisius University professors. A reception will follow with complimentary food and craft courtesy of West Side Bazaar.
ArtsCanisius will present “Art in the Afternoon” with film screenings of Through the Repellent Fence and Running Fence on Wednesday, October 24 at 1:00 p.m. in the Regis Room.
Border Initiative Week concludes with a roundtable discussion of artists and participants from the Niagara Street Mural Project on Friday, October 26 from 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. in Regis Room. A closing reception will follow in the Andrew L. Bouwhuis Library.
