Dr. Caruana is retired from the practice of surgery, although he remains immersed in the teaching of medical ethics to undergraduate and graduate students. These include medical and physician assistant students.
He founded the Institute for Health Care Ethics, a not-for-profit corporation, whose mission is promoting the highest standards of health care for the community through education of students, professionals, and the public on ethical principles and practice of medicine.
The institute offers presentations to the public on ethical and religious considerations on end-of-life treatments.
He serves as the co-chair of the Erie County Medical Center ethics committee.
