Canisius Commemorates Hispanic Heritage Month

Hispanic Herigage Month

Buffalo, NY – Canisius University will celebrate and commemorate National Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 - October 15, with a series of events.  The occasion of Hispanic Heritage Month offers Canisius an opportunity to reaffirm that diversity is one of the university's greatest strengths, and be reminded that the American identity is a fabric of distinct traditions and stories, woven together.  

For generations, Canisius University has been informed by Hispanic educators and administrators and enriched by Hispanic culture, both of which the institution will celebrate throughout Hispanic Heritage Month with the following events:

Monday, September 25, 2023 / 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. / Science Hall
Screening, Boricua Soy Yo
Free, open to public
This documentary by filmmaker Rocco Anastasio explores Puerto Rican history, the island’s relationship and status with the United States, and the cultural identity of Puerto Ricans living on the mainland.  (The screening is presented by the WNY Peace Center and the Latin American Solidarity Committee of WNY.)

Salsa Dancing
Admission limited to Canisius University students
The ALANA Student Center at Canisius University will host an evening of live music and salsa dancing.  Considered one of the most popular Latin dances, contemporary salsa evolved from several early Cuban dance forms, including the Mamba and the Cha Cha Cha.

“Fleeing, Waiting, Hoping”

This panel discussion will feature researchers from Xavier University who will share their findings about life at the border as seen through the eyes of women and children asylum seekers, as they wait in Nogales, Mexico.  The panel discussion will be accompanied by an art exhibit, which will be on display in the Bouwhuis Library through November 15, 2023.
