The Canisius University Creative Writing Program will host a book launch and reading celebrating the publication of How to Sacrifice, a new collection of poetry by Mick Cochrane, on Tuesday, October 6, at 7 p.m. in the Grupp Fireside Lounge in the Richard E. Winter Student Center.
Free and open to the public, the event will feature a reading by Cochrane, followed by a Q&A, book signing and reception.
In How to Sacrifice, Cochrane explores the ways seemingly commonplace moments can reveal deeper meaning and significance.
Kevin Kling, an American playwright, actor, author and storyteller, praises the collection, writing: “In this beautiful collection, Mick Cochrane exposes the divine hiding in the everyday and shows that there are oracles all around just waiting to be recognized.”
Cochrane is an emeritus professor of English at Canisius, where he was named Peter Canisius Distinguished Teaching Professor three times. He taught courses in writing and literature and co-directed the Creative Writing Program. He continues to coordinate the Canisius University Contemporary Writers Series, which brings writers to campus for readings and conversations with students and the community.
Cochrane has published fiction, poetry and books for young readers. His first novel, Flesh Wounds, was a finalist in Barnes & Noble’s Discover Great New Writers Competition. His second novel, Sport, was selected for the New York Public Library’s annual Books for the Teen Age list. He's is also the author of The Girl Who Threw Butterflies and Fitz. His short stories, essays and poems have appeared in literary magazines including The Sun, The Cincinnati Review, Northwest Review and Kansas Quarterly.
