Canisius Names Wood Associate Dean of Business

September 11, 2012

Buffalo, NYAntone Alber, PhD, dean of the Canisius University Richard J. Wehle School of Business, announced that Gregory R. Wood, PhD, is the new associate dean of the business school. Wood, who most recently served as chair and associate professor of marketing and information systems at Canisius, will begin serving immediately.

“Greg has shown a strong ability to work well with both faculty and students, and has demonstrated an understanding of the significant marketing challenges faced by the business school and the college as a whole,” said Alber.  “I look forward to working with Greg on a number of initiatives that I think will strengthen the business program at Canisius and position us for growth over the next decade.”

Wood joined Canisius University in 1987 as an assistant professor of marketing and was promoted to associate professor in 1994. He served as chair of the Management/Marketing Department from 2002 - 2009, and was instrumental in the 2011 business school reorganization that created the Marketing & Information Systems Department, which he has chaired since its inception.  Wood also coordinated the Canisius/F.I.T. program, a joint degree program between Canisius and the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City.

Working with marketing professor David J. Snyder, PhD, associate professor of marketing, Wood has served as co-advisor to the Canisius University American Marketing Association (AMA), since 2002.  The Canisius AMA chapter has distinguished itself as a leading collegiate chapter in the national professional organization and won a number of prestigious competitions in recent years.

Wood’s research and teaching have increasingly focused on technology and social media.  He is co-author of a leading information technology textbook with Canisius professor, Linda A. Volonino, PhD, professor of information systems, and led the effort to bring courses in social media and digital marketing to the Canisius campus.  Wood continues to work with other full-time and adjunct faculty to position the college as a leader in this emerging field.

In addition to co-authoring two textbooks, Wood authored 16 publications in journals and conference proceedings, and presented his research at a number of national and international conferences. He served on the Buffalo Legal Aid Bureau Board of Trustees from 2005-2009 and provides consulting and program evaluation research services to a variety of area businesses and not-for-profit organizations through his company, HausMark Research Services.

Wood earned his doctorate degree from the State University of New York at Albany and his undergraduate degree from Oakland University in Rochester, MI.

He replaces James S. Valone, PhD, who has held the position since 1980 and is currently on leave from Canisius.  Valone came to Canisius in 1961.  Throughout his half-century of service at the college, he inspired hundreds of students, both as associate dean of the business school and as a professor of history.

One of 28 Jesuit universities in the nation, Canisius is the premier private university in Western New York.
