Canisius Tops $10 Million in Fundraising

July 18, 2018

Buffalo, NY - Canisius University closed out its fiscal year on May 31 with $10,231,088 in fundraising results, the college’s highest non-campaign annual total in its history. In addition to several large gifts and bequests, Canisius exceeded its goal for the annual fund, raised a record total on Giving Day and added almost 40 new members to the college’s Leadership Society ($1,000+).

“We are grateful to our alumni and friends of the college who recognize the value of a Canisius education and who have so generously supported our efforts to keep our costs affordable and accessible to our students and their families,” says President John J. Hurley. “Everywhere I go, I encounter alumni and parents who cannot say enough good things about the Canisius experience and it’s so gratifying to see that come back to us in philanthropy.”

The 2017-18 results include:

  • More than $7.2 million ($7,277,932) added to the college’s endowment, which stood at $137 million at the close of the fiscal year. These funds are restricted and unrestricted and used for financial support of students and academic programs. The largest gifts this year included $2 million from philanthropist and former Canisius trustee Patrick P. Lee and $1 million from alumnus, former trustee and attorney Anthony J. Colucci Jr.
  • $1.22 million to the Canisius Annual Fund – the primary source for immediate institutional aid
  • More than $1.7 million designated to academic programs, athletics, campus ministry and other areas to support the student experience

Giving was augmented by a highly successful 24-hour Giving Day in April, which saw 2,158 donors contribute almost $460,000 to the college’s academic programs, clubs and athletic teams.

“This was a fantastic year for fundraising at Canisius and we cannot thank our donors enough for their support and belief in the mission of Canisius University,” said William M. Collins, vice president for institutional advancement.  “I salute our entire advancement team for its hard work and dedication to the greater good of Canisius University.”

Canisius University is one of 28 Jesuit, Catholic universities in the nation and the premier private university in Western New York.
