Ignatian Year

July 12, 2021

Buffalo, NY -  Canisius University joined a worldwide celebration on May 20 to commemorate the 500th anniversary of St. Ignatius Loyola’s conversion. On this fateful day – a half millennium ago – a cannonball struck the soldier, Ignatius, as he defended the Spanish crown against the French. It was during Ignatius’ lengthy recovery that he committed his life to holy chivalry and service to God.

To celebrate Ignatius’ spiritual conversion and his subsequent founding of the Society of Jesus, Superior General Arturo Sosa, SJ, called for a yearlong celebration. “The Ignatian Year,” he declared, “offers us a great opportunity … to realize that change is possible. Yes, our hearts can be softened. Yes, our world can find new ways forward.”

The Ignatian Year continues through July 31, 2022.
