Nash, Norris, Veasey, Adams Experiential Learning Fund for ALANA Students

Experiential learning is central to the Canisius University strategic plan and to the Jesuit commitment to educating the whole person. Students often discover their vocation through transformational experiences like internships, undergraduate research, professional conferences, and study abroad. Yet the cost of travel, registration, or a summer without a paycheck can put these opportunities out of reach.

A group of ALANA alumni started this fund to change that. As students, they were guided by Jesse E. Nash HON ’93, Sababu C. Norris, Martha A. Veasey ’82, MS ’89, and Lilly A. Adams-Dudley ’72, MS ’85, Canisius employees whose mentoring and support shaped their education and their lives well beyond graduation. The fund carries their names and continues their work. Its purpose is to ensure every Canisius student can pursue a transformative experience and pair it with the kind of mentoring these four offered generations of students.

Who can apply

Canisius students in good standing who have secured, or are pursuing, an experiential learning opportunity and need financial support to take part.

What the fund supports

  • Grants of up to $5,000 for travel, registration fees, or living expenses connected to an internship, research, a professional conference, study abroad, or a similar experience.

What we ask of recipients

  • Meet with a mentor, either a Canisius alum or a current employee, before the experience begins.
  • Close the experience with a check-in conversation or a written reflection.

How recipients are selected

Awards are based on financial need and the strength of the student's plan for the experience.
