BUFFALO, NY – As students and families increasingly focus on college affordability and return on investment, a new ranking has recognized Canisius University as one of the nation’s best values among small colleges and universities. SmartAsset, a personal finance company that publishes consumer research and rankings, placed Canisius at No. 15 nationally on its 2026 list of America’s Best-Value Small Colleges and Universities.
The ranking evaluated more than 1,000 institutions with fewer than 5,000 undergraduate students and considered both affordability and student outcomes, including graduation rates and median earnings 10 years after enrollment. According to the analysis, Canisius graduates earn a median salary of $60,681 within a decade after first enrolling.
The ranking complements other recent national recognitions for Canisius. In the 2027 U.S. News & World Report rankings, the university was named among the Top 10 regional universities in the North for Best Value (No. 9) and Best Undergraduate Teaching (No. 10). While U.S. News considers a broad range of academic and institutional measures, SmartAsset focuses specifically on college affordability, graduation outcomes and long-term earning potential.
Together, these recognitions reflect what distinguishes the Canisius experience: a personalized education shaped by close faculty mentorship, hands-on learning opportunities and a commitment to preparing students for success after graduation. The recognition also reflects the university’s broader strategic commitment to making a high-quality private education both accessible and affordable.
Most recently, the university announced the New York Promise Scholarship, which covers 100% of tuition for eligible New York State students from households with adjusted gross incomes of $100,000 or less. The New York Promise builds on the success of the Buffalo Promise Scholarship, launched in 2025, which covers 100% of tuition for eligible students residing in Buffalo’s 142-ZIP code. The program attracted more than 1,000 applications in each of its first two years and represents more than $40 million in four-year tuition support for its first two cohorts.
Canisius was founded in 1870 in Buffalo, NY, and is one of 27 Jesuit colleges and universities in the U.S. Consistently ranked among the top institutions in the Northeast, Canisius offers undergraduate, graduate and pre-professional programs distinguished by close student-faculty collaboration, mentoring and an emphasis on ethical, purpose-driven leadership.
