Oct. ArtsCanisius Event Highlights "Opera & Politics"

BUFFALO, NY – Canisius University presents the following October ArtsCanisius events, which are free and open to the public: 
    • Thursday, October 20 - Canisius University Composer-in-Residence Persis Parshall Vehar presents a lecture entitled “Opera and Politics” at 2:30 p.m. in theMontante Cultural Center. Vehar will discuss examples of classical composers’ historical involvement in the political climate of their respective countries. The highly political parts of her 5th opera,Eleanor Roosevelt, which had its fully-staged premiere in spring 2011, will be shown. 

      Vehar has had more than 200 works commissioned and performed by leading orchestras, opera companies, ensembles, soloists, and schools throughout the United States and Europe. Vehar’s works have been performed at many of the finest concert halls throughout the United States and Europe including the Royal Festival Hall (London), Graz Music Festival (Austria) and the Piccolo Spoleto Festival (Charleston, NC). She is the recipient of 28 annual ASCAP Awards and seven Meet the Composer grants.

    • Tuesday, October 25 - The Amberg Quartet presents a performance entitled “A Legacy of Jewish Composers” at 7:30 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center. The quartet features Betsy Reeds, flute; Anna Mattix, oboe and English horn; John Fullam, clarinet; and Persis Vehar, piano. The program will include works by Mendelssohn, Bloch, Lieberman, Kreisler and Finzi. In addition, “To Music,” a piece composed by Vehar, will conclude the concert.

  • Monday, October 31 - Meet-the-Faculty Recital featuring Christina Lynch, soprano; and Sandra Leary, piano; at 12 p.m. in the Montante Cultural Center. The recital will feature a selection of soubrette/light lyric opera arias by Mozart, Copland, Gounod, Puccini and Handel.
