For many college students, summer is a time to recharge. At Canisius University, it is also an opportunity to make meaningful progress toward academic and career goals.

Through summer courses at Canisius, students can complete degree requirements, explore areas of interest and create more flexibility in their academic schedules. Whether they are looking to stay on track for graduation, prepare for graduate school or gain valuable experience outside the classroom, summer learning helps students keep moving forward.

“Students take summer courses at Canisius for a variety of reasons,” said Karl Kozlowski, PhD, associate dean of the School of Behavioral and Health Studies. “Some use the summer to improve their academic standing, complete prerequisites for graduate programs, participate in internships or research, or even graduate early.”

Here are five ways students make the most of summer at Canisius:

1. Stay on track for graduation
Summer courses give students the opportunity to complete credits and fulfill core curriculum requirements, helping them stay on pace for their degrees. Some students use summer classes to graduate early or create more flexibility in future semesters.

2. Balance academics with athletics and other commitments
For student-athletes, summer coursework can help ease the demands of the academic year. By completing classes during the summer, students can better balance coursework with practices, competitions and travel.

3. Prepare for graduate school and career goals
Many students and adult learners use summer to strengthen their academic foundation before pursuing graduate study. Summer also provides time for internships, research and other hands-on learning experiences that help students explore career interests.

4. Take advantage of flexible learning options
Summer courses are designed to provide flexibility for students with a variety of schedules. Online course options allow students to complete coursework while managing work, internships or other responsibilities.

5. Continue progressing through graduate programs
Summer learning is especially valuable for graduate students and adult learners balancing coursework with professional and personal commitments.
Craig Rogers, PhD, associate professor of economics and finance, said summer MBA courses provide students and especially adult learners with the flexibility to begin graduate study, stay on pace or accelerate their degree completion.

“Summer courses are a great opportunity for students to continue making progress toward their goals while balancing the other commitments in their lives,” Rogers said. “The asynchronous online format allows students to complete their coursework on a schedule that works for them while still engaging with faculty and meeting weekly milestones.”

From completing credits to gaining experience and preparing for the future, summer at Canisius is another opportunity for students to build momentum and achieve their goals. Graduate programs in teacher education, school counseling and business are among Canisius’ popular summer offerings. Students in Canisius’ Physician Assistant Studies program also continue coursework year-round as part of the program’s intensive three-year curriculum.
