Buffalo, NY - Canisius University unveiled the architectural renderings for its new Student Success Center, marking a significant step forward in the university’s commitment to enhancing student support services. The project, which received a $1 million capital grant through the New York State Higher Education Capital Matching Grant Program (HECap), is scheduled to begin following May 2025's commencement ceremonies on the third floor of the Andrew L. Bouwhuis, SJ, Library.
The newly released renderings showcase a modern, student-centered design that reflects Canisius’ strategic focus on accessibility, integration, and academic excellence. Bright, open spaces, collaborative work areas, and dedicated zones for academic and career support will create a welcoming hub where students can connect with vital resources throughout their educational journey.
“Seeing the renderings come to life brings us one step closer to fulfilling a key priority of our strategic plan, Answer the Call,” says Canisius University President Steve K. Stoute. “This center is a tangible investment in our students’ academic, personal, and professional success.”
The Student Success Center is designed to centralize and strengthen student support services, meeting the evolving needs of today’s learners. The center will integrate:
The Academic Achievement Team, which provides academic advisement for first-year students, undeclared majors, and student-athletes.
The Career Development Team, which offers counseling, resume and cover letter guidance, and job/internship search support.
Student Accessibility Services, which delivers accommodations and support for students with disabilities.
The center will also house Canisius Cares, a program that connects students to external emotional, social, and veterans' services, and the Academic Mentoring Center, which supports peer-to-peer learning and coaching.
“The challenges students face in the wake of the pandemic—academically, emotionally, and socially—remain significant,” adds Harold Fields, EdD, vice president for student affairs and dean of students. “The Student Success Center is our response, bringing comprehensive support under one roof to help students thrive.”
The HECap program awards matching grants to colleges and universities to enhance facilities that improve student life and program delivery. As part of the grant requirements, Canisius will match the $1 million in state funds with at least $3 million of its own investment.
Canisius was founded in 1870 in Buffalo, NY, and is one of 27 Jesuit colleges and universities in the U.S. Consistently ranked among the top institutions in the Northeast, Canisius offers undergraduate, graduate and pre-professional programs distinguished by close student-faculty collaboration, mentoring and an emphasis on ethical, purpose-driven leadership.
