Course Structure

While the majority of each course is completed online (with the exception of the On Campus Component), Anthrozoology professors utilize a unique "hybrid" course format that incorporates a variety of educational technologies to share and discuss materials, including readings, data sets, images, video, and presentations.

Course Materials

Canisius University uses Desire2Learn (D2L) for our learning management system. Anthrozoology students are provided with access to D2L, where each course maintains a separate website. Courses are organized by sections, with links to course readings, external webpages, presentations, and media resources that guide students throughout the semester. D2L is where you will find your course syllabus, rubrics, discussion forums, and dropboxes for assignments. Incoming anthrozoology students will be given a D2L orientation during their first On Campus Component.

Discussion Boards

Our courses make use of D2L's discussion post features on a weekly or bi-weekly basis, allowing students to engage in or lead asynchronous dialogues about course materials with their peers and with professors. These discussion posts include questions about readings, short position papers, student research findings, and even debates about various topics that are relevant to the course.

Synchronous Meetings

Most of our courses also utilize Zoom--a web conferencing program--to hold synchronous, face-to-face meetings between students and professors. These regular video meetings allow us to hold more traditional classroom-style lectures and discussions that many students and alumni find useful for clarifying difficult concepts, discussing issues in more depth, and share additional material on various topics of interest. Zoom meetings are often considered a highlight of our program, allowing us to build a stronger sense of community throughout a semester.
