Buffalo, NY - It is with great sadness that Canisius University shares the news that
Nelson D. Civello '67, HON ’17, passed away on Monday, April 28, 2025.
Nelson was a visionary leader in the financial industry who dedicated his talents, resources and unwavering commitment to Canisius for decades. Following a distinguished career on Wall Street, where he served as president of the Fixed Income Capital Markets Group for Dain Rauscher Corp. and chair of The Bond Market Association, Nelson returned to alma mater in 2001 to educate the next generation of financial professionals.
As a John R. Oishei visiting professor, Nelson launched the Golden Griffin Fund (GGF) alongside Richard A. Wall, PhD, creating an innovative student-run investment management program that enabled students to make real investments using real money. A transformational financial contribution from the Nelson D. Civello Family Foundation made possible the Financial Markets Lab and ensures his name will be associated with the GGF and a legacy of excellence in financial education at Canisius in perpetuity.
Nelson retired as director of the GGF in 2008 but remained deeply committed to the program’s success, serving as its most staunch advocate and steadfast supporter. He took immense pride in watching the GGF team achieve first place in the CFA Institute Research Challenge of WNY for 15 consecutive years and claim the global championship in 2015.
Nelson's dedication to Canisius extended far beyond the classroom. He served with distinction through four terms on the Canisius Board of Trustees and was honored as a trustee emeritus in 2024. His financial acumen was invaluable to the university through his service as chairman of the Investment Advisory Committee. In recognition of his exceptional service to alma mater, Canisius honored him with its Distinguished Alumni Award and induction into the DiGamma Honor Society.
Nelson earned his BS in economics from Canisius in 1967 and an MBA from Bowling Green University. He served as the Commencement speaker and received an Honorary Degree from Canisius in 2017. He is survived by his wife, Patricia, their daughter Lauren, and his siblings Carole Civello Mikolajczak, Donna Civello, Jodi Civello Miller, Dianna Civello, vice president for advancement, and many devoted nieces and nephews.
Family will be present on Thursday, May 1st from 3pm to 7pm at Amigone Funeral Home, Inc. 5200 Sheridan Drive, Williamsville, NY. A Celebration of Life will be offered on Friday, May 2nd at 9:30 am in Christ the King Chapel.
May Nelson—a beloved son of Canisius—rest in the eternal peace of Christ.
