April is Autism Awareness Month and Marcus Thomeer, PhD, co-director of the Institute for Autism Research (IAR), made the rounds on local media to educate and create public awareness about the disorder.

He recently appeared on WIVB-TV’s “Daytime Buffalo” to discuss the role the IAR plays in the community. Thomeer also authored an article for Buffalo Healthy Living magazine (page 22) about the IAR’s development of new and effective programs for autistic children, and was featured in a similar story published in In Good Health, Western New York’s healthcare newspaper.

  • WKBW-TV Channel 7 Reporter Sydni Eure visited campus to interview President Stoute and students about the change. You can watch the story, which aired on Monday night’s 11:00 p.m. news.
  • WIVB-TV Channel 4 invited President Stoute to be ‘live’ in studio for its “News 4 at 4” program on Tuesday to discuss the new test-free policy. You can watch the interview on the WIVB website.

WGRZ-TV Channel 2 Weekend Anchor Claudine Ewing sat down with President Stoute on Friday for a preview piece on the college’s new president, ahead of his Saturday installation. Click here to watch the story. The Institute for Autism Research at Canisius made front page news on Sunday, October 9. The Buffalo News ran an in-depth article about the success of the Institute’s intervention treatment programs for children with autism, and reported on how a nearly $1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense is enabling Canisius researchers to study whether the interventions can be widely available through after-school programs.   Click here to read the story.

Buffalo News Reporter David Robinson interviewed Julie Anna Golebiewski, PhD, for a June 17 article titled “No Signs of a Slowdown for the Buffalo Niagara Job Market.” The associate professor of economics noted that despite soaring prices, rising interest rates and a plunging stock market, the local job industry appears to be holding up well.

Canisius College honored the life of Aaron Salter Jr. during undergraduate commencement ceremonies this past weekend, when it, posthumously, conferred a bachelor of arts degree upon the Tops Market security guard who lost his life in the racially motivated shooting. Salter fired multiple times at the shooter before being shot and killed himself. Salter’s son, Aaron Salter III, accepted the Canisius diploma from the college on Saturday. His father needed only three credit hours – or one class – to complete his degree. All the local media outlets attended commencement ceremonies to report on the degree conferral:

The Buffalo News and Channels 2, 4 and 7 visited the Margaret Wendt Animal Behavior Lab in Science Hall to get a first-hand look at the ongoing training and enrichment exercises of the “Kittens on Campus.”

Canisius students are teaching the eight-week old kittens how to walk into carriers on their own, how to complete small agility courses and how to high-five.  The training and enrichment exercises are aimed at making the kittens more attractive adoption candidates and encouraging positive relationships with humans.
