Canisius Named Best University for Transfer Students

BUFFALO, NY – For the second consecutive year, the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society (PTK) has named Canisius University to its Transfer Honor Roll, which recognizes colleges and universities that foster exceptional transfer pathways and empower community college students to achieve excellence and success in their academic pursuits. Canisius University was one of just 251 higher education institutions nationwide to earn this recognition from PTK.

Best Colleges for Transfer Students

The Transfer Honor Roll is based on 40 key metrics related to the support and success of transfer students, including admissions practices, credit transfer policies, affordability, campus engagement, and bachelor's degree completion. Institutions earning the Transfer Honor Roll distinction demonstrated measurable outcomes: 75 percent of transfer students graduate, 81 percent of their credits apply toward their majors, and 74 percent receive merit-based financial aid.

“Being named to the Transfer Honor Roll validates what we see every day at Canisius – that our students are incredibly successful when given the right support,” says Vice President for Enrollment Management Danielle Ianni, PhD.  “We’ve built our entire transfer process around helping students succeed.  Whether that’s making sure their credits count, connecting them with the right financial aid resources, or providing the academic support they need, we remove barriers so students can focus on their education and achieving their goals.”

How to Transfer College Credits

As part of its commitment to transfer student success, Canisius University accepts up to 66 credit hours from two-year institutions and up to 90 credits from four-year institutions.  Credit is also accepted for AP, IB, CLEP and military coursework.  To help students understand how many courses may count toward Canisius credit, the university provides an unofficial credit tool, which allows students to view course equivalencies from institutions whose credits have been accepted in the past.  Students interested in transferring can also request an unofficial credit evaluation to receive a more precise estimate.

Scholarships and Financial Aid for Transfer Students

All accepted transfer students at Canisius are automatically considered for academic merit scholarships, which range from $4,000 to $16,000 per year, based on cumulative college GPA.  In addition to merit aid, Canisius offers specialized scholarships for students with particular academic interests or leadership experience.  Students are encouraged to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to maximize eligibility for institutional, state and federal aid.

Canisius University offers rolling admission for transfer applicants, allowing students to apply at any point during the year. The university also provides dedicated transfer advising, an orientation experience designed for transfer students, and personalized academic and career support.
