President Steve K. Stoute
The Board of Trustees named Steve K. Stoute the 25th president of Canisius College in February, 2022. Formerly vice president for strategic initiatives and chief of staff at DePaul University in Chicago, IL, President Stoute officially began his term on July 1, 2022.
Since joining Canisius, President Stoute has been named to Buffalo Business First’s Power 100 Business Leaders of Color and its Power 250 list of the most influential leaders throughout the Western New York region. City and State NY named him among the 100 most influential faith leaders in New York State. Most recently, President Stoute received the 2023 Penn Carey Law Alumni Society’s Young Alumni Award presented each year for outstanding professional achievement.
Stoute joined DePaul, the largest Catholic university in the United States, in June 2018 to serve as chief of staff. He also served as vice president for strategic initiatives beginning in June 2020. In these roles, Stoute served as the university president’s senior advisor. His responsibilities included facilitating the implementation of the university’s strategic plan, leading transformative institutional projects, as well as serving as administrative liaison to the Board of Trustees on key executive and strategic matters.
An attorney, Stoute previously worked as an associate specializing in corporate and securities matters at Dechert LLP in Philadelphia, PA. His higher education experience includes work at Princeton University, first as an assistant director of the Princeton Varsity Club in the Department of Athletics and later as a capital giving officer in the Office of Development. He also served as the life skills coordinator in the Department of Athletics at the University of Southern California.
Born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago, a dual-island Caribbean nation, Stoute immigrated to the United States in 2000 to attend Seton Hall University in New Jersey. At Seton Hall, he competed on the men's soccer team and graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in business administration. After completing the prestigious NCAA postgraduate internship, he attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned a master's degree in exercise and sport science. Stoute holds a JD from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.
He is a past member of Seton Hall’s Board of Regents and the Penn Carey Law Alumni Society Board of Managers. A leader in Catholic higher education, he previously served on the Board of Trustees for the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago, IL.
