A Jesuit education is measured by who students become

Canisius students leave as leaders for and with others. A Jesuit education empowers students to lead lives of purpose and learn to face challenging problems directly.

The Benefits of a Jesuit Education

We provide real-world experiences through service-learning trips, classroom learning, and community-based engagements to broaden perspective and help create tangible change.

Service Immersion Trips- Putting Values into Action

Students travel with faculty and staff to underserved areas and mix classroom experiences with learning directly in the community to help understand justice issues and work toward change. Students build community with each other as time spent on this trip provides time to connect with fellow Griffs as well as the larger community.

Recent trips include:

  • Visiting the US/Mexico border to understand the complexity of immigration and migrants experience
  • Visiting East Los Angeles to focus on gang rehabilitation and re-entry programs
  • A trip to Wheeling, WV to understand food insecurity and work at local food banks
  • A trip New Orleans to understand education issues and assist at underserved schools

Classroom Experiences: Building Community Locally

While service-immersion trips are paired with a classroom component on the trip, Canisius faculty are also fueling community engagement with students in the classroom through course-specific service projects. You don’t need to leave Buffalo to understand how to live for and with others. Classes spread across all disciplines including Pre-Med, Spanish, Education and more involve students in service-learning projects early in their Canisius careers.

How Does a Jesuit Education Prepare Students for Life After College?
Transferable Skills

Service-learning and community building provide real-world practical skills that students carry with them forever. Recent employer surveys show that employers value soft skills such as empathy, communication, and creative problem solving, all skills taught through community engagement and service-learning.

Preparation for Life After College

Numerous Canisius graduates have continued onto selective organizations such as Teach For America, AmeriCorps, Jesuit Volunteer Corps, and the Peace Corps, with Canisius experiences offering preparation for the application and time abroad.
