65th Annual Accounting Banquet

The Department of Accounting at Canisius College is proud to announce the 63rd Annual Accounting Banquet on Wednesday, April 20, 2022.  The banquet will be held at Salvatore's Italian Gardens, 6461 Transit Road, Depew, NY, with cocktails starting at 5:30 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m.

Nora E. Eberl ’92, CPA
Co-Owner/CFO, Eberl Iron Works, Inc.

Nora E. Eberl began working at BDO Seidman in 1992 upon graduation from Canisius College. She worked as both an audit and tax associate for 6 years before joining the family business in 1998. While working at Eberl Iron Works as Controller and Human Resource Officer, she pursued a degree in Civil Engineering at SUNY at Buffalo, graduating in 2005. Nora and her cousin John Eberl became third generation owners of the company in 2012. The company continues to grow in size and product offerings year after year. A sister company, Strut Systems Installation was founded in 2017. 
Nora received a Six Sigma Green Belt certificate from TCIE (The Center for Industrial Effectiveness) at UB and is a member of a local Chief Executive group of Vistage International. She has been awarded a 40 Under 40 award and a Woman of Influence Award from Buffalo Business First and has been listed as one of their Power 125 Women.
Nora continued to be involved at alma mater after graduation – first as a volunteer annual fund caller, then as Alumni Board President, member of the Board of Regents, the Council on Accountancy, the Women’s Leadership Council, and she currently sits on the Board of Trustees. When not giving back to alma mater, Nora is actively involved in the Rotary Club of Buffalo. Having served as Club President, she is now President of the Rotary Club Foundation. She has also served on the Nardin Academy National Alumni Advisory Board.  
Nora and her husband Matt Plizga have three children – daughter Rita and sons Henry & Edward. They live in the Elmwood Village in a busy household with their dogs Clifford and Emma. The family enjoys boating, camping in the Adirondacks and going on road trips.
 

The Accountant of the Year Award

David M. Schmidt ’90, CPA

David M. Schmidt began at Ernst & Young in 1990 upon graduation from Canisius College.  He spent his career providing audit and other services to public and private companies throughout Western New York, as well as assisting EY audit teams throughout the Central and Northeast US specifically in the gaming and hospitality space.  
He also led teams in performing internal quality reviews, led numerous learning events and was a frequent speaker on accounting topics at EY and other local CPE sessions. Schmidt led EY’s recruiting efforts for its Upstate New York practice.
Subsequent to retiring from EY in in 2019, Schmidt has provided financial and accounting services to a variety of companies.  Schmidt serves as a resource to 43North, providing financial due diligence at various stages of its annual business startup competition.  He also serves as an advisor to 43North’s audit committee.  In 2021, he joined the Board of Directors of Catholic Health System, where he serves on the Strategic Planning and Audit committees.  Schmidt continues to serve as the Treasurer for The National Federation of Just Communities of WNY, Inc.  an organization focused on diversity and inclusion in our community.  He is an active member of the finance and audit committees of Annunciation Church in Elma.
Schmidt has served on the Canisius College Council on Accountancy since 2009.  He served as Chair of the Council from 2018-2020, previously he served as chair of the Council’s committee on recruiting and diversity, and continues to actively serve on the executive and membership committees.  Schmidt’s service on the Council has been focused on student engagement, diversity recruiting and expanding the Council’s membership to be more inclusive of women and a broader level of financial and accounting executive.  
Schmidt resides in Elma, NY with his wife Marjorie and their two sons, Matthew and Benjamin.
