Professor Joyce Fanning started her career as an educator in 2005, first working with toddlers in a pre-school classroom. In 2007,  she began teaching kindergarten at Stanley Makowski BPS #99. During her time working for BPS, Professor Fanning taught kindergarten, first grade, third grade, and fourth grade, and served as a building mentor to support newly-hired teachers. In addition to her work experience, Professor Fanning is a trained IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) teacher with a focus on inquiry-based instruction and curriculum development in grades pre-k-4.

An alumna of Canisius University, Professor Fanning returned to her alma mater in 2016 as a Teach for America Mentor where she supported first-year teachers in Buffalo Public Schools, supervised student teachers, and taught several courses. Some of the courses Professor Fanning has taught at Canisius include: Social Studies & ELA Methods, Student Teaching Seminar, Classroom Management, Emergent Literacy, and The Literate Environment

Combining her professional experience and passion for developing and supporting new teachers, Professor Fanning became Co-Director for the Western New York Teacher Residency Program in 2018. She is responsible for overseeing the program and supporting each cohort through their two-year journey to become teachers. Most recently, she has partnered with the National Center for Teacher Residencies and Bank Street: Prepared to Teach to develop WNYTR and learn from programs around the country.
