Angelini Awarded Chevalier Des Palmes Acad̩miques

BUFFALO, NY – Eileen M. Angelini, PhD, professor of French in the Department of Modern Languages, Literatures and Cultures at Canisius University, received the insignia of chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques. Angelini was given the chevalier, which is a medallion worn on a ribbon, by Pascal Soares, Honorary French Consul, during a ceremony at the college on April 19. 

The l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques has been a cherished award for the past 164 years. It is given to those who make major contributions to French education and culture. The award was created by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1808 to recognize devotion and accomplishment in the realm of teaching.

Angelini also is the recipient of a 2010-2011 Canada-U.S. Fulbright Award to conduct research at McMaster University, in Hamilton, Ontario. As the Visiting Chair in Globalization and Cultural Studies at McMaster, Angelini used her nine-month grant for a research project entitled “Le Tour de l’Amérique du Nord: Following the French in North America.” She examined the cultures and histories of Francophone regions in Canada outside of Québec and their ties to the United States. 

Angelini is the recipient of a 2009-2010 Faculty Enrichment Program Grant from the Government of Canada and a 2008 Québec Studies Program Grant for Program Enhancement awarded by the Gouvernement du Québec. She was recognized by the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF) in 2008 with its Dorothy Ludwig Award for Outstanding Teacher of the Year at the University Level. In 2007, Angelini was honored by the New York State Teachers Association of Foreign Language Teachers (NYSAFLT) with the Ruth E. Wasley Distinguished Teachers Award (Post-Secondary). 

Angelini holds a PhD and an MA in French studies from Brown University. She received her BA in French from Middlebury College.
