HEOP Scholars Academy

All first-year HEOP students are required by the New York State Education Department to participate in a four-week Scholars Academy. This summer program provides opportunities for students to strengthen their academic skills and to develop positive relationships with peers, mentors, and staff. The Scholars Academy offers courses in English, Critical Reading/Writing, and Math in addition to educational workshops addressing topics such as student leadership, career development, and financial aid.

Counseling

We recognize that students need support with their transition to college. To ensure student success, the Canisius Opportunity Programs for Education (COPE) department provides a full-time counselor and academic success coach. Students have access to both individual and group counseling on a wide range of topics essential to college success, such as social and academic adjustment, personal growth, and career development.

First-year and sophomore students meet with the counselor and academic success coach at least three times each semester, while junior and senior students meet at least twice each semester. In addition, Canisius University has its own Counseling Center, which provides services to all students.

Tutoring Services

The COPE Department provides free tutoring for all HEOP students and strives to offer a comprehensive list of tutors across a wide range of subject areas. It is the responsibility of students seeking tutoring services to contact the appropriate tutor to arrange a meeting. If a tutor is not available for a particular course, contact the office at 716-888-2575 for alternative options.

Tutoring services are also available to all students through the university's Success Center.
