Canisius University Writing Center

The Canisius University writing center aims to help students, faculty, and staff with writing at any stage of the writing process. We work with writers in any field, including the humanities, the social sciences, and the hard sciences. Our aim is to help students become stronger writers. We do this through one-on-one peer tutoring. Writing center appointments are for any writer at any skill level. Because all writing is a conversation, talking about your writing with one of our tutors will help you become a stronger writer. Tutors are undergraduates who complete a for-credit training course before they begin working in the center.

Examples of common writing center appointments include:
* Understanding an assignment
* Developing a thesis
* Brainstorming ideas
* Outlining
* Assisting with proofreading
* Analyzing evidence for an argument
* Working on long projects

Appointments and Location

Writing center appointments are thirty minutes long. Bring a copy of your assignment, anything you’ve already been working on, and a willingness to work hard!

Mission Statement

The Canisius University Writing Center exists to help writers in all disciplines become better writers. To this end, we engage with writers in thoughtful dialogue. We trust that all writers have important contributions to share with their discourse communities. We approach writers with humility because we value their ideas and the linguistic diversity of our campus. We have faith in both the writers we work with and the evolving tutoring process. We have hope that writers are willing to engage in the writing process, and we will treat all writers as if they are entirely invested in their work. And most of all, we will love writers where they are as colleagues, peers, and fellow human beings whose ideas and voices deserve to be heard and understood.
