Welcome From the Interim Dean
Welcome to the College of Arts and Sciences at Canisius College. The college offers 38 undergraduate programs, 3 graduate degree programs, and 3 pre-professional programs. Offerings range from the humanities to the natural sciences and mathematics. The College of Arts and Sciences’ faculty consist of 116 dedicated full-time faculty members many of whom are recognized nationally and internationally as first rate scholars and researchers. Made possible by a low student-to-faculty ratio, all faculty are committed to getting to know students as individuals. Through the exposure of a liberal arts education and the foundation of high quality programs, lifelong habits of critical thinking, analytical skill sets, and careful reflection are fostered in and outside of the classroom. As one of the 28 Jesuit Institutions in the United States, the college is also dedicated to the Jesuit values of cura personalis (care for the whole person), and magis (the ability to do more and become more in the hope of offering greater service to others). The college strives to educate the whole person intellectually, ethically and spiritually, and develops students who are “men and women for and with others”. So if you study at Canisius, expect to be challenged to achieve your full potential in all these areas. The college is also a leader in experimental learning. Students across all disciplines have the opportunity to put their classroom knowledge into practice, through scholarly research (working in close collaboration with faculty) and through transformative immersion experiences that involve travel throughout the world. The breadth and quality of the educational experience offered by the college provides students with the tools they will need in the future to excel in a rapidly changing world and to do so in an ethical, civic and socially engaged manner. Regardless of major areas of study, the educational experience received at the college not only lasts a lifetime, but also prepares students to become thoughtful, reflective, responsible and committed citizens and respected professionals.
