Institute for Global Engagement
The Institute for Global Engagement at Canisius College is a faculty-generated initiative within the Center for International Education. The IGE seeks to internationalize the culture of Canisius College, prepares students to become global citizens, extends its international programing outward to community of Alumnae and other life-long learners, and assists many different organizations in the development of international programs.

About the Director
Dr. Timothy Wadkins is professor of Christian History and Theology and a specialist in modern Christianity in the southern Hemisphere. Alongside his many publications he has recently published Pentecostalism in Modern El Salvador: From the Blood of the Martyrs to the Baptism of the Holy Spirit (Baylor University Press, 2017). In addition to his academic work, Dr. Wadkins brings to this position a wealth of International experience and expertise. In his capacity of director of the Institute for the Global study of Religion (IGSOR), which he founded in 2001, Dr. Wadkins developed student and alumnae programs throughout the world including India, the Philippines, El Salvador, Tanzania, and Mexico, all of which continue to flourish. In many ways the work of the new IGE is a broadened out, multi-disciplinary extension of the work of the IGSOR. Alongside his global travels, Dr Wadkins enjoys spending time with his wife and two children as well as golfing, cycling, and fishing.

Major current initiatives of the IGE
- A subsidized program for faculty-led international courses and programs.
- A support system for international course/ program development and implementation.
- The “Global Citizens Program” for undergraduates.
- A continuing education seminar series for alums and other post-college age adults called “The Road Less Traveled”
Long Term Goals
- To develop a strategic presence in one or more international locations.
- To work with Enrollment Management to market Canisius College to prospective students in IGE’s international locations.
- To open some IGE international courses to students from other colleges and universities, both locally and throughout the AJCU.
- To facilitate a conversation about embedding a global experience requirement into the core curriculum.

Current IGE Programs for Students
International Education Internship with Dr. Nikki Calabrese in Oviedo, Spain
May 14 - June 4, 2018
Application Deadline: December 1, 2017
This international education internship in Oviedo, Spain, is designed to allow candidates to have an international teaching experience. It is especially designed for education majors but is appropriate for all Canisus students with an interest in teaching English.
Seminiar and Semester in the Philippines
July 9 - 27, 2018
Join Dr. TImothy Wadkins, Dr. Allyson Backstrom, and Dr. Julie Anna Golebiewski for a three week academic seminar, “Health, Wealth, and Faith in the Philippines” (3 credit hours, justice attribute). For those who wish to stay for the semester, the seminar is followed can continue into a study abroad program (August 12-December 15, 2018) at the Ateneo De Manila University in Manila.

Join Canisius College President John J. Hurley, Maureen Hurley, and Dr. Timothy Wadkins on a seminar in El Salvador and Guatemala.
