Canisius CSTEP: Collegiate Science & Technology Entry Program

What is CSTEP?

The Collegiate Science and Technology Entry Program (CSTEP) at Canisius University is a grant-funded initiative sponsored by the New York State Department of Education.

CSTEP prepares students for success in careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), or health-related professions through academic enrichment, mentorship, and experiential learning.

CSTEP students gain access to a wide range of opportunities designed to help them excel academically and professionally:

  • Professional Development: Participate in workshops, present at conferences, publish in journals, and attend networking events to strengthen your skills and professional presence.
  • Experiential Learning: Gain hands-on experience through faculty-mentored projects and industry internships.
  • Graduate School & Licensure Preparation: Receive support for professional exams and graduate school applications, including graduate school entrance exam assistance (GRE, MCAT, DAT, etc.).
  • Academic Support: Access tutoring, academic counseling, remedial and special summer courses including Supplemental Instruction.

  • Career Preparation: Receive one-on-one support from a career coach, attend career readiness workshops, and engage in talks with industry professionals to explore future pathways.
  • Service Learning: Participate in service projects such as supporting K–12 students with hands-on STEM activities or engaging in community service initiatives that promote leadership and build career experience.

Eligibility

To qualify for CSTEP, students must meet requirements established by the New York State Department of Education.

You may be eligible if you:

  • Are a current Canisius University undergraduate student enrolled full-time in a STEM or health-related major, or planning to pursue a licensed profession.
  • Are a New York State resident.
  • Are a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • Students who are income eligible as defined by New York State income guidelines (PDF).

    Note: Eligible majors include biochemistry, biology, biomedical sciences, chemistry, clinical lab science, computer science, data science, environmental science, kinesiology, mathematics, psychology, and programs of study which lead to  professional licensure.

Program Expectations

Participants are required to:

  • Maintain academic standards (a minimum GPA of 2.5 is required) and satisfactory academic progress in your degree program
  • Attend CSTEP-sponsored workshops, mentoring sessions, and professional development events.
  • Utilize support services such as tutoring, supplemental instruction, the writing center, etc
  • Engage in at least one experiential learning activity, such as research, an internship, or community-based project.
