Supplemental Instruction

What is Supplemental Instruction?

Two women sit at a table reviewing notes together

Supplemental Instruction (SI) provides academic support in foundational “gateway” courses in biology, chemistry, physics, calculus, and computer science, which are often challenging for first- and second-year students. SI leaders, trained upper-level students who have successfully completed these courses, attend class sessions and lead multiple small group study sessions each week. These sessions focus on collaborative learning, problem-solving, and reinforcing key course concepts. The goal of SI is to improve student understanding, performance, and retention in critical introductory courses while fostering strong study habits and peer learning.

"SI has been super helpful restating lecture material. It is great to be with peers and be able to collaborate on ideas that may have been confusing. Even after a few sessions I feel more confident going into the first exam."
