Canisius Hosts Summer Leadership Institute

BUFFALO, NY - Canisius University and the Roman Catholic Diocese’ Department of Catholic Schools will host a Summer Leadership Institute for Catholic school leaders on Tuesday, June 26 and Wednesday, June 27. The conference, entitled“Embodying Catholic Education in the 21st Century: Theory into Practice,” begins at 8:00 a.m. each day (breakfast and registration is at 7:30 a.m.) and takes place in the Montante Cultural Center, located at the corner of Main Street and Eastwood Place on the Canisius University campus. 

John B. King Jr., PhD, New York State Commissioner of Education and President of the University of the State of New York, is a keynote speaker on opening day of the Summer Leadership Institute. He will speak from 8:45 – 9:45 a.m. 

Rev. Edward U. Kmiec, Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo, will deliver the opening prayer on the second day of the conference. Bishop Kmiec is scheduled to speak at 8:00 a.m. 

This is the third annual Summer Institute for Catholic School Leaders. This year’s event offers principals and teachers, from the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo and Rochester, innovative teaching and leadership skills necessary for 21st century instruction. Leadership sessions will engage participants in discussions that focus on best practices in teaching in the Catholic tradition. Topic areas include teaching and assessment, service-learning initiatives, Catholic mission and identity, differentiated instruction, and how to build positive relationships with parents. 

The Institute will also provide participants with skills to enhance classroom instruction via online technology and resources. Digital storytelling, geo-caching, utilizing electronic libraries, and staying electronically organized are a few of the topics that will be covered during the two-day Institute. 

The Summer Institute for Catholic School Leaders is sponsored by Canisius University, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Buffalo, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester and the Western New York Writing Project.
